Roberts Story – Finding Purpose Again with Transitions

Just a short while ago, I found myself at one of the lowest points in my life.

I was in my late 40s, struggling with poor mental health, and everything I had built over the years seemed to fall apart all at once—my marriage ended, I lost my job, and many of the friendships I relied on simply faded away. I felt isolated, directionless, and unsure how to even begin putting the pieces back together.

That’s when I found Transitions through Exeter Community Initiatives.

I first joined the HOPE workshop, not quite knowing what to expect—just hoping, really, that it might help. From the moment I arrived, I felt genuinely welcomed. It was a space where I didn’t feel judged. I could talk openly, listen to others, and start thinking differently about what I’d been through. The facilitators helped me reflect on the past, but more importantly, they helped me look ahead. We talked about coping strategies and how to rebuild a sense of purpose.

Encouraged by how much that experience helped, I signed up for two more workshops: Just the Job and Connection Reflection. Each one took me a little further along the path to recovery. I started to rediscover who I was—what mattered to me, what skills I still had to offer, and how I might get involved in something meaningful again.

That’s when the ECI team suggested volunteering at a few workshops myself. I wasn’t sure I was ready—but they believed in me. They listened, supported me, and made sure I felt prepared and encouraged every step of the way. It wasn’t just about ticking a box—it was about rebuilding confidence and reconnecting with people. Volunteering gave me a sense of purpose I hadn’t felt in a long time.

Now, I’m actively looking into employment opportunities, and I’ve joined local community groups where I’ve made genuine friendships. For the first time in a long while, I’m looking forward to the future.

What stood out to me most through this journey was the trust I was met with, the inclusivity of every workshop space, and the reliability of the team who kept showing up for me. They did what they said they’d do, and they made sure I was always welcomed and valued.

Transitions hasn’t just helped me rebuild my life—it’s helped me believe in it again.
