'Building Communities'

The Project aims to support the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities of Exeter. For details of the local BME groups that the Ujima project supports, click here

Why 'Ujima'?

Ujima is a Swahili word meaning 'To build and maintain our communities together and make our sisters' and brothers' problems our problems and solve them together'. This sums up exactly what the project is about.

How does the project work in practice?
•  Providing direct support to existing groups/networks.
•  Identifying the need for and supoprting the development of new projects/groups/networks in response to unmet needs.
•  Promoting and enabling community development by supporting Black and Minority Ethnic communities at a strategic level within the city.

How does the project ensure effective development?
•  Providing the level of staffing and internal support systems in order to effectively carry out the project's work.
•  Providing appropriate accountability to a range of stakeholders.
•  Ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with accepted standards of good practice.

What is Community Work?
•  Community work is about actively involving the community, of all race, culture and ethnicity in the issues that affect their lives.
•  Empowering people with the tools to make informed decisions that will aid the development of that community.
•  Social inclusion through community development helps improve the quality of life for those living and working in the Exeter area.

The Project needs people like YOU to:
•  Help the community develop ideas.
•  Tell us about community needs.
•  Help set up new initiatives.
