Volunteering with Flying Start 

Flying Start Children's Centre is keen to involve volunteers in all aspects of our work. We really value the input of our committed team of volunteers, who bring energy, enthusiasm and some great ideas into the Children's Centre. Our current volunteers include students, retired people, parents, unemployed people, and people who want to do something worthwhile with some of their spare time. They are men, women, young people and older people.

Why get involved?

 People volunteer with us for many different reasons. For some it is a wish to gain experience for a future career working with children and families, for others it is to do something really worthwhile in the community. Some just do it because it's fun.

What could I do?

There are a range of activities that volunteers can sign up to help with:

•  Discovery Play Volunteer -helping with a group for mobile babies as they discover the world around them through play with familiar household objects. A volunteer helps to set up the play space, greets parents, observes the children and helps to clear up afterwards Sorry, no volunteers needed at the moment

• Parent Forum Members - Flying Start Children's Centre welcomes the input of local parents to keep us informed about the needs of families in our community. The role of the Parent forum is to help shape the direction of the Children's Centre and to decide future priorities. Parents are the experts in what is needed in our area. Local parents of all backgrounds are very welcome to take part. Sorry, no volunteers needed at the moment

•  Admin Support Volunteer - provides support to the admin team in a busy office and tasks include receptionist duties, welcoming visitors,  helping to produce publicity material, photocopying, folding leaflets, preparing and posting mail shots and welcome packs, filing and dealing with the post. Sorry, no volunteers needed at the moment

• Baby Start Volunteers - Volunteers help with the smooth running of our most busy group 'Baby Start'. This is a friendly drop in for parents and their babies which runs alongside the child health clinic on Monday afternoons at St Sidwell's Centre. Sorry, no volunteers needed at the moment

• Public Events Volunteers -  From time to time, Flying Start provides activities for children at events such as playdays etc. We are looking for a pool of people who can be called upon on an 'as and when' basis, to come and lend a hand, help to collect equipment and deliver to site, set up and run activities such as face painting, art and craft activities, story telling and games. Sorry, no volunteers needed at the moment

• Toddler Group Volunteers - Flying Start support a number of toddler groups in the city centre ranging from small groups to large and busy ones. We are looking for volunteers to assist the Toddler Group Leaders in the set up, clear up and general running of the group, greet parents and get involved in the activities run. Sorry, no volunteers needed at the moment

CRB Checks

 As the wellbeing of children is at the centre of everything we do, all our staff and volunteers must have a Criminal Records Bureau disclosure before they can do any work with Flying Start. As these checks can take several weeks to come through we would encourage you to come and see us straight away if you think you'd like to volunteer with us, so we can get the ball rolling as quickly as possible.
